Data exchange across control layers
Industrial control systems can separate local device communication from higher-level supervisory exchange. A drive-to-drive link describes a direct data path between drive devices, while a fieldbus is a communication network used to exchange structured data among connected automation equipment. Modbus RTU is a serial communication protocol commonly used to represent control and status data in a defined message format.
Signals, supervision, and remote visibility
A PLC is a programmable controller that executes logic from configured inputs and outputs. SCADA refers to supervisory control and data-acquisition functions that present process information for observation and control. NETA-21 is identified in the technical terminology as a remote-monitoring interface; the distinction is between collecting or viewing information and the separate control logic that determines how equipment responds.
