Drive terminology at a glance
A Variable Speed Drive (VSD) controls the speed of an electric motor by regulating the electrical conditions supplied to it. In a drive specification, the kW value describes the stated power category, while the voltage notation identifies the electrical supply range being considered. “3-phase” refers to the type of alternating-current supply used by the drive system.
Frame size is a physical and electrical classification used to distinguish drive variants within a product family. The applicable frame size depends on the selected apparatus and the project requirements; it is not a substitute for checking the motor, supply, duty, enclosure, and installation details together.
Control and safety terms explained
Direct Torque Control (DTC) is a drive-control method that manages motor flux and torque through the drive’s control system. Safe Torque Off (STO) is a safety-related drive function that prevents torque-producing energy from being generated by the motor. The required safety function and its implementation should be defined against the machinery risk assessment and applicable project requirements.
SS1, SLS, and SBC are commonly used names for distinct safety functions: Safe Stop 1, Safely-Limited Speed, and Safe Brake Control. Their application depends on the required stop sequence, speed limitation, braking arrangement, and overall safety architecture. The relevant function, interfaces, and validation requirements should be agreed for each project rather than assumed from a general feature list.
Power-quality and braking terminology
A DC choke is an inductive component placed in a drive’s DC link. In suitable arrangements, it contributes to reducing certain current disturbances associated with drive operation; the expected power-quality behaviour remains dependent on the complete electrical system and its configuration. Harmonic filtering refers broadly to measures intended to reduce selected harmonic current components.
An EMC filter is used to manage conducted electromagnetic disturbances within defined equipment and installation arrangements. A brake chopper switches braking energy to a braking resistor or related braking circuit so that the motor can decelerate under the specified conditions. “Low harmonic” generally describes a drive arrangement intended to reduce harmonic distortion, while “regenerative” describes an arrangement capable of returning braking energy to the electrical supply or another designated energy path. The applicable option and its technical requirements should be confirmed for the particular configuration.
